This is Water

This is Water – David Foster Wallace Commencement Speech
“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day. That is real freedom. That is being taught how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the "rat race" — the constant, gnawing sense of having had and lost some infinite thing.”

📡 Signals

You are not creative unless you are creating things. You are not a filmmaker if you don't make films.

You have to believe that the work you are doing is part of something bigger. That it has the power to radically transform the world. Whatever you are making may be more important than what think of it.

Creativity and uncertainty are twins. They go everywhere together.

You have to try, every single day to create something that is worthy of people's time. That's it.

Creativity might be the only thing that cannot be automated.

Be brave enough to be bad at something new.

They should, because they are — they’re great devices at lower prices, and will be supported for years to come. But if the iPhone XR were named “iPhone (2018)”, it’d feel old.

"Here’s how I think about writing in public: you have to weigh the importance of feeling safe with the importance of being known. My therapist once described writing as a way for me to gain control over how I am seen (insert joke about the “being perceived” meme). I agree with that: instead of relying on someone else to narrativize my life or offer an observation about me, I use writing as a way to assert my own narrative. It’s how I remain more subject than object, how I maintain conviction in my own agency. Writing in public is a way to get constant feedback—to prove to myself that what I’m writing is worth something to someone."

The Killers + Bruce Springsteen

Even before he duetted with Brandon Flowers on this new version of 2008’s “A Dustland Fairytale,” you could hear Bruce Springsteen in the Killers’ music. “The good old days, the honest man, the restless heart, the promised land,” Flowers sang 15 years ago, in one of the band’s best songs, as if fast-forwarding through Springsteen’s songbook to summon him like Beetlejuice. Back then, Flowers spoke about wanting to write his generation’s Born to Run. Instead, he wrote anthems about wanting to write Born to Run, and a sea of fans saw themselves in his wild, passionate pursuit of greatness – Read More via Pitchfork

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked.
